Madonna did not return to the MTV Video Music Awards after 23 years just to clock in. She came to remind pop music who helped write the rulebook.
The Queen of Pop is taking fans behind the scenes of her spectacular 2026 VMAs performance, sharing a closer look at the rehearsals, creative planning and star power behind one of the ceremony’s biggest moments.

The eight-minute spectacle opened with Sabrina Carpenter before welcoming Charli XCX for a performance of “Danceteria Afterhours.” The celebrity-packed production also featured appearances from Julia Garner, Debi Mazar, Seth Rogen, Sombr and others, blending music, fashion, choreography and theatrical chaos into one glorious pop culture fever dream.

The performance marked Madonna’s first appearance on the VMAs performance stage since 2003, when her infamous onstage kiss with Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera became an enduring piece of award-show history.
This time, she returned with music from Confessions II, revisiting the dance-floor spirit that helped define her career while collaborating with a new generation of pop stars.
The behind-the-scenes footage offers more than a nostalgia trip. It shows the work required to make a live performance feel effortless, while underlining Madonna’s knack for turning spectacle into cultural conversation.

Pop stars may come and go, but Madonna understands the assignment: make history, then show everyone how it was done.
