Childish Gambino enters the Mushroom Kingdom as Nintendo levels up its next Mario blockbuster.
Somewhere in the universe right now, a green dinosaur is about to sound suspiciously like Childish Gambino. And honestly, the culture is here for it.
The latest trailer for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie dropped and revealed one of the film’s biggest surprises. Donald Glover is officially voicing Yoshi, the beloved egg throwing sidekick from Nintendo’s legendary gaming universe.
Yes, that Donald Glover. The creative polymath behind Atlanta, the music of Childish Gambino and some of the most chaotic internet memes of the last decade.

The upcoming animated sequel expands the Mario universe beyond the Mushroom Kingdom and into space, pulling inspiration from the wildly popular Super Mario Galaxy video games. Mario, Luigi, Peach and Toad head into cosmic territory to face Bowser Jr. and other intergalactic chaos.
The voice cast is stacked like a Comic Con lineup. Chris Pratt returns as Mario, Anya Taylor-Joy reprises Princess Peach, Charlie Day is back as Luigi and Jack Black continues his delightfully dramatic run as Bowser. New additions include Brie Larson as Rosalina, Issa Rae as the Honey Queen and Luis Guzmán as Wart.
For Nintendo, the move makes perfect sense. The first Mario movie pulled in over $1.3 billion worldwide and became the highest grossing video game adaptation ever.
Now the sequel is aiming bigger, louder and more star powered. And honestly, casting Donald Glover as Yoshi feels like a pop culture cheat code. The man already moves between music, film, comedy and television like a final boss level of creativity.

Because when The Super Mario Galaxy Movie hits theaters April 1, one thing is guaranteed. Yoshi might finally have bars.
